Mesut Ozil has signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract to remain at Arsenal until the summer of 2021.

The midfielder becomes the highest-paid player in the club's history - earning about £350,000 a week before tax.

The deal, signed on Wednesday, follows months of speculation about the future of the 29-year-old Germany international, whose previous deal was due to expire at the end of the season.

He joined the Gunners from Real Madrid in 2013 for a then club record £42.4m.

Mesut Ozil to Extend Arsenal Contract Only With Imminent Auba Arrival (Bild)

Mesut Ozil will provide Arsenal with a huge boost and extend his contract in North London, according to reports in Germany.

The German international midfielder's deal with the Gunners is due to expire in the summer, and there has been little progress with talks in recent months.

It had been thought Ozil would follow Alexis Sanchez out the Emirates Stadium exit door - however he now seems set to stay.

German newspaper Bild report that Ozil will stay at Arsenal in order to link up with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is set to join from Borussia Dortmund.

Aubameyang is in London to finalise a £55m switch from the Bundesliga club, and the ambition shown by Arsenal to bring in a world class striker has reportedly convinced Ozil to stay.

The 29-year-old playmaker has been linked with several clubs, including Manchester United, who signed Sanchez in a swap deal for Henrikh Mkhitaryan in January.

Signing Aubameyang therefore takes on even greater significance for Arsenal, who find themselves as one part of a transfer triangle.

The deal depends on them selling Olivier Giroud to Chelsea - an £18m fee has been agreed - and the Blues letting Michy Batshuayi go to Dortmund, replacing Aubameyang.

It is set to be a pivotal summer for Ozil in many respects, with both his club future to be decided as well as going to the 2018 World Cup with Germany, the reigning champions.

Bild also say it will be a big summer for Ozil personally, with his wedding to fiancee Amine Gulse reportedly to take place after the World Cup in Russia.

Wright: Ozil Would Perform Better at Man United

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright believes soon-to-be free agent Mesut Ozil would perform better at Premier League rivals Manchester United as doubts remain over his future in London.

Ozil is out of contract at the end of the season, and the Germany international playmaker is no closer to signing a new deal, tipped to follow Alexis Sanchez out of Emirates Stadium amid reported interest from Jose Mourinho's side.

The 29-year-old worked with Mourinho during the pair's time together at Real Madrid and Wright conceded Ozil would flourish in Manchester.

"I think he's that type of player who will drag a team by its bootlaces through a game, but if your team is playing well, he's going to sprinkle stardust all over the place," Wright told Sky Sports when asked if he thought Ozil would perform better at United.

"With the players he'd be playing with at Man Utd as well, he is unbelievable.

"He is just awesome, and with the right team, and the right movement in front of him, he is easily one of the best I've seen. He's amazing.

"Is this difficult to say? Yeah. And we can't keep arguably two of the best players, arguably in the history of the club, ability-wise. It's sad times."

Ozil, who missed Wednesday's goalless draw against Chelsea in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final, has scored four goals and tallied five assists in the Premier League this season.

Since arriving from Madrid in 2013, Ozil has netted 27 goals and recorded 47 assists in 134 league appearances.

Arsenal will return to the pitch Sunday to take on Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Ozil Is Happy To Stay at The Emirates - Wenger

Mesut Ozil current deal at the emirates is due to expire at the end of the season, which has continued to fuel speculation regarding his potential exit.

Premier League rivals Manchester United have been linked with the 29-year-old, with manager Jose Mourinho having previously worked with Ozil during his time at Real Madrid.

However, Wenger believes Ozil will stay in north London and sign a new contract. He said, according to Goal: “No, I believe he wants to stay. He is not to be convinced.”

When asked if there is a need for contract discussions with the German, Wenger added: “Let us do that and let’s not talk about it.”
