Inter could ask Real Madrid for the return of Mateo Kovacic on loan if they fail to bring Ramires from Jiangsu Suning.
According to Tuttosport and Mediaset Premium, the negotiations began in a lunch meeting six weeks ago between Inter director Piero Ausilio and Kovacic’s agent.
Ramires remains the first choice, but Jiangsu Suning are unwilling to loan the Brazilian out without having a replacement ready.
Kovacic joined Inter as a very young man in January 2013, arriving from Dinamo Zagreb for €11m.
He never quite delivered on that promise and struggled to fit into the ever-changing tactical landscape at San Siro, so was sold to Real Madrid for €31m in the summer of 2015.
Now 23 years old, the Croatia international has 14 appearances for the Merengues so far this season, but is certainly not a regular.
Real Madrid have an ulterior motive for loaning Kovacic to Inter on favourable terms, as they consider this an introduction to talks for Mauro Icardi.
