Arsenal are in advanced talks to sign Real Madrid midfielder Sami
Khedira with Arsene Wenger firmly setting his sights on landing the
German international after being offered the player for a cut-price fee.
The Bernabeu side are keen to sell at least two members of their expansive squad as they look to trim their wage bill as well as looking to adhere to UEFA’s FFP (Financial Fair Play) guidelines and with the 27 year old now being well into the last year of his current contract Real Madrid president Florentino Perez wants to secure a fee for the player who could leave on a free transfer next summer.
Wenger had initially opted against a move for Khedira on the grounds that both the player’s original asking price and his wage demands were deemed too high by the Arsenal board, but it’s believed that both these concerns have been addressed.
Real Madrid had wanted as much as €25m (£19.9m) for the World Cup winner but have now reassessed this valuation and will accept as little as half that fee now so as to secure a quick-sale.
Khedira is likely to be used in a limited role at Real Madrid if he does stay for the upcoming campaign and Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to not field the box to box performer for the Super Cup clash with Sevilla has left the player in no doubt as to his standing at the Spanish club.
A number of sides are said to be hot on the heels of the former Stuttgart man but Khedira is thought to favour a move to the Emirates Stadium, not least because he is hoping to team up with his good friend, and national team colleague, Mesut Ozil at the north London outfit.
Khedira is also ready to reduce his salary expectations to further tempt the Gunners boss into action, a move that appears to have succeeded.
Wenger is desperate to bring in a strong tackling midfielder, primarily with a view to the future with Mikel Arteta being in the latter stages of his career, but also as he feels a player like Khedira would be a better fit for the role.
Arsenal had been chasing Sporting Lisbon youngster William Carvalho and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin to this end but moves for both have stagnated and Wenger is therefore all the more convinced Khedira is the right man for the job.
The Premier League side want to get the deal done within the next 48 hours and will look to swiftly complete a £10m move with chief negotiator Dick Law being drafted in to secure the club’s fifth high-profile signing of the summer following the acquisitions of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, David Ospina and Calum Chambers.
